CHAPTER 17

Echo

Zephier was on me before we managed to open the double doors to his chambers. Powerful arms flanked me, the claw-shaped ring on his finger digging into the wood, as though he had such little control, he didn’t trust himself to touch me. “I’ve been waiting to hear you call my name, my heart.” Magic poured out through his palms and into the doors, unsealing them. I expected him to hurry me inside, but his hips pinned me in place, rocking against mine so passionately, I ached.

Ached to close the bond, I reminded myself sternly. Not for him—it could never be for him. Not the feel of his soft lips on mine, the inviting warmth of his skin, or the feel of his powerful hands molding to the tender parts of me.

The barest edge of his fang nipped along my jaw, kissing and sucking along my throat to my clavicle. When his tongue dipped between the valley of my breasts, I shivered, a moan leaving my lips before I could catch it.

His thigh shoved between my knees, grinding rhythmically against my mound, sliding the side slits of my skirt higher. “How badly you want me.” I couldn’t deny it. He could scent it on me—giving me away as much as the hard outline of his cock.

I rocked my hips against his thigh, once, twice, before Zephier threw us into his bedroom. With a flick of his hand, he sealed the door behind us, the sound of the lock clicking catching in my throat and lungs.

The world narrowed down to just us, King Ridrah and his captive bride, leaving my heart racing in my ears at the sound of his heavy footfalls on the stone as he neared the bed.

“Are you going to stay by the door, my little seal-bride? Or will you join your new husband?” he teased mirthfully. I followed, like the tide to her moon, joining Zephier at the foot of his bed. The back of his hand stroked my cheek. “So soft.” He studied me. “Do you want to help me out of my clothes?”

I blinked, taken aback by the question. “I don’t possess all the knowledge on your…” I finished with a gesture to all of him. I could guess how some garments were removed by looking at them, but all the metalwork was a mystery.

Maybe watching me struggle was foreplay to him.

“We have all night for you to learn,” Zephier said, his voice warm and spiced. He guided my hands to his chest, showing me how to remove the chains from his jacket.

As I removed each strand, I placed them in his hand, adding and adding until it looked like a metallic bird’s nest. I persevered until his shirt was next.

My fingers shook as I unfastened each pearlescent button. From nerves or excitement, I do not know, not until a glint of metal beneath the fabric made me freeze.

“Go on. I won’t hurt you.”

But I couldn’t move. I had felt the metal from which he earned his name when he caught me, but I had never expected it to look like this.
